Cartridge Acquires Playmint

companyannouncement

Today we're excited to share that Cartridge has acquired Playmint, the UK-based onchain gaming studio.

From the beginning, our teams have been driven by a similar conviction: that decentralized technology can fundamentally change how games are built, owned, and operated. Playmint demonstrated this with The Crypt, the first fully onchain co-op multiplayer game, and later with Downstream, an autonomous world where players could permissionlessly extend the game itself.

In a space full of noise, Playmint has stayed focused on the hard problems—building open source tooling, publishing research, and proving out ideas that have pushed the entire ecosystem forward. That alignment in values and technical ambition made this acquisition a natural fit.

As part of the acquisition, we're bringing Playmint's Playerchain technology into the Dojo engine. Playerchains are a peer-to-peer consensus architecture designed to enable real-time multiplayer without centralized servers—addressing one of the key challenges in building responsive onchain games. Integrating this into Dojo will expand what is possible for developers building with our toolchain. We'll share more on specific integration plans as development progresses.

This acquisition strengthens our ability to provide the most comprehensive infrastructure for onchain game development. We're excited to build on the foundation Playmint established and continue pushing the boundaries of what games can be.
